It's the time of year! Apples, apples everywhere!
I decided to organize a field trip to a nearby orchard and cider mill with a informal group that I'm in and I'm so glad that I did! We had a great time and the kids learned a lot!
We had such a large group that we were split into two separate groups. Our group started off sitting at some picnic tables to listen to one of the employees describe the workings of the orchard: how they grow apples, how to pick apples, what they do with bad apples, how they store the apples, etc.
She talked to us about the bags that the pickers use to collect apples. I did not know that there was a rather specific way to successfully pick an apple from a tree!
We got to sample some apples AND the apple cider (made on the premises and sugar and preservative free!). This was actually the first time I had ever tasted apple cider. It was delicious. We ended up purchasing a half gallon from their shop before we left for the day!

This particular orchard also houses bees and produces their own honey. We got a lesson on how bees make honey and how they harvest it at the end of the tour.

Last we toured the cider mill to see how they processed the apples to get this seasonal drink.
We purchased homemade fudge, apple cider, and a few other homemade treats from the shop. Yummy! We had a fabulous time and plan to visit again next year!
This trip would have been great to take when we did our apple nature study unit last fall. I will keep that in mind for next year!
