Studying the Bible with Children

Studying the Bible is an important part of any Christian's life.  It is how we grow closer to the Lord and how we mature in our own personal walk.

I was saved as a nine year old child, but unfortunately did not have anyone to teach me how  to study God's Word OR that I should do it often.  It wasn't until I was an adult that I began to do so and even now, I have trouble doing it as regularly as I should.  This is one of the reasons it is important to me to instill in my children at a young age that God's Word should be central to their lives and that in order to apply it to our lives appropriately, we have to not only read it, but delve into it.

We have used many resources over the last few years, but after receiving the opportunity to review it, Grapevine Studies: Stick Figuring Through The Bible has quickly become one of my favorites.

We reviewed the Beginner level (for ages 5-7) of Part 1-Old Testament Overview: Creation to Babel. This study goes over the main characters and stories of this portion of the Old Testament to make a framework in their little minds in which to later hang mental pegs upon.  Using what they call "stickfiguring," students draw, in simple form that is age and developmentally appropriate, various shapes, colors, words, and of course, stick figures, pictures that corresponds to their daily lessons.

At the end of each lesson, there are simple review questions to help you assess your child's comprehension of the Bible story.  Here is an example of a student's completed student pages at the end of a lesson:

This study can be used with your family's preferred Bible version and only requires a few simple supplies.  Teachers will need a Bible, the teacher book, a dry erase board and markers and a Bible dictionary.  Students will need student book, a Bible, and colored pencils.  That's it!  These are all things that most homeschoolers have lying around the house anyway!

You can spread this study out over 10 weeks or use it over 20 days, however works best for your family!

At the Grapevine Studies site, you can download sample lessons and explore the plethora of studies available in levels ranging from preschool to adult.  The books are available in print and as ebooks.  We reviewed the ebook version.  Prices begin at as low as $8.95!

There is also the newest line of Traceables, created for ages 3-5, these allow smaller children to participate along with their older siblings without the frustrations of not being able to draw the figures correctly!

We reviewed the Birth of Jesus traceable.  The pictures are clear and simple enough to be traced by little hands.  Include your little ones in learning God's Word too!

The traceable studies have 7 lessons each and are priced at $6.95.

Grapevine Studies, as a part of this 10 Days of Homeschool Giving, has agreed to giveaway one digital copy of Part 1: Old Testmament Overview: Creation to Babel, Beginner Level both student and teacher books to one of my readers!  To enter, just fill out the Rafflecopter form below. Good luck!

  2. I would love to use this with my children because, like you, while I was saved as a young girl I didn't have anyone to teach me to read my Bible regularly or anything like that. I want my kids to have a close relationship with Jesus from a young age & not have to wait til they're grown like I did. =)

  3. I think this would be a terrific program for my son especially. He seems to comprehend & retain more when he's "hands-on" so I think this would be an especially good tool to use with him
