Learning with Toys!

If you've been a follower of my blog for a bit, you will know that through our current homeschooling curriculum, we have been studying early American history, including the settling of Jamestown.  We like to use hands on activities and crafts to supplement our learning because it makes things more fun AND helps children to better remember the information. In an online group that I participate in, a fellow homeschooler using the same curriculum, shared a link to a set of Jamestown settler figures, I purchased it to accompany our studies. These settler figures come in what is called a TOOB, whis is really a plastic tube filled with 12 themed figures.

They were such a hit, that I approached the company that sells them, and asked if they would allow me to review their Powhatan Indian set for this series.  They agreed and we are thrilled!

While the Powhatan are not the tribe that we are studying currently (the Wampanoag), the Powhatan did eventually come into contact with the settlers at Jamestown(which is where the stories of John Smith and Pocahontas originate) so I knew they would come in handy.

In the Jamestown settlers TOOB, you receive John Smith, a musket carrying settler, a workman with an ax, a female settler gardening, a female settler cooking, a blacksmith, a sailor with a navigational device,a chicken, a pig, a ship, a fire, and a cannon.

With the Powhatan Indian set, you receive Wahunsonacock(the father of Pocahontas), a woman cooking, a mother with a baby, a hunter with a bow, Pocahontas, a warrior with a battle club, a dugout canoe, a deer hide, a deer, a bear, a fire, and a deer hide.

Plenty enough to have your very own early Virginian settlement reenactment!

All three of my children loved playing with these.  They used their imagination to create many scenarios and scenes or to recreate events that we had studied in our school lessons. My two year old liked to line them up in various patterns.

This is the "sure I'll smile AGAIN for you Mom" look :P

There are MANY various themed TOOBs available for purchase to enhance your child's pretend play AND provide educational supplementation to your curriculum.  You can find TOOBS for everything from the civil war to horse breeds to native animals from various regions around the world.

Safari LTD has offered to giveaway to one reader BOTH the Jamestown Settlers TOOB AND the Powhatan Indians TOOB for your child's own educationally creative play!

Giveaway is open to US residents only.  To enter fill out the Rafflecopter form below!

  5. I was looking at these Toob sets earlier this school year but they are very popular still and are kind of hard to find at a reasonable price. I would love for my girls to use them for a model of the Jamestown settlement. Thanks for the giveaway.
