I'm a fan of Amish fiction. I've mentioned several times in other book reviews that the whole culture fascinates me. The simpleness, the community, the home cooked REAL food. *wistful sigh* I live vicariously through those books at times when the business of life threatens to take me over. I also enjoy the wholesomeness of the books. In today's society what passes for good literature is astounding. It is refreshing to read of families who interact respectfully with one another, of parents who are involved with their children, of committed marriages, and of family values being intentionally passed on to younger generations.
One of my goals of parenting is to pass on my love of reading to them. I've been quite successful in this area with my oldest daughter. She reminds me of a younger version of myself, always her nose in a book, reading 3-5 at a time and leaving them tucked in various places throughout the house. She devours them. I love it. :)
Life with Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher is Amish fiction for young girls and I thought that my daughter would really enjoy it. We read it aloud together over the course of a couple of weeks. My daughter giggles at Lily's antics, worried over the troubles, and followed along with every line. After only four chapters, she declared that we MUST buy the rest of the books in the series!
The story follows six year old Lily Lapp and her family through the birth of a new sibling and building up their farm to a very big change for them all. The writing is simple, but enough to engage a young reader and each chapter is almost a little story all of its own.
I thoroughly enjoyed that I didn't find even one single objectionable thing in the book as we read along that wasn't corrected within the book (bad attitudes from children, disobedience, etc.). The book does touch on the serious issue of cancer, but I think it was handled in a way that is appropriate for young children.
This would make a good addition to any young girl's bookshelf and we look forward to reading the rest of the series!

About the Book:
Book 1 in the ‘Adventures of Lily Lapp’ series.
Lily is six in this story, just starting first grade in a one-room schoolhouse in upstate New York. Her parents are busy building a farm, and soon animals join the family—Jenny the cow and Chubby the miniature horse. A baby brother arrives, too, which Lily has mixed feelings about. (She wanted a sister!) Aside from a mischievous friend like Mandy Mast, Lily is happy at school and even happier at home.
