Homeschool Week in Review--The Last Ones of the Year

Well, it's a wrap, folks!  Gabriella's kindergarten year has come to a close.  It's bittersweet in many areas.  We love our curriculum and I'm sad to shelve it for awhile until Bub is ready for it, and it's another sign that my firstborn baby isn't really a baby anymore. *sob* *wail**sigh*
Now that I'm done blubbering, I'll share with you the things we've been doing as we ended our year(I'll post about Aron's preschool stuff tomorrow!).

We continued to learn about George Washington
We watched a video about the Washington monument and the damage that occurred during the massive earthquake

We learned about how the moon has no light of its own and how the earth's position does or blocks the sun's light from reaching it(yes, that is a cow flashlight). Foil=moon

She learned about liquid measurement,

and about harvesting cotton,

built her own replica of Monticello,

worked on telling time,

and made her own Lewis and Clark exploration vest.

She learned about panning for gold with the help of chocolate coins wrapped in gold,

learned how pioneers carried fragile things like eggs in big bags of flour or cornmeal when they traveled westward in their wagons(she has an egg in a container of cornmeal while she rolled around the floor),

reenacted Lewis and Clark traveling the Missouri river,
made our own flag like the one that flew during the time of the original thirteen colonies,

made a stick horse like Robert E. Lee's horse, Traveler

and built a log cabin out of pretzels and peanut butter to represent the cabin that Abraham Lincoln was born in.

She made a cat after reading about Dwight Moody and how he once threw one into a crowd to lighten the mood,

learned about Noah Webster and utilized a dictionary,

practiced grouping and counting by tens,

painted a picture of a light bulb after learning about Thomas Edison,

and a camouflage tent after reading about General MacArthur.

We tested different substances to see which ones dissolved in water,

made a torch like the Statue of Liberty,

made a sailboat like the U.S.S. Constitution,

made an edible Texas flag after learning about the Alamo,

practiced math with snacks,

and she made her own clay face after learning about Mt. Rushmore.

Finally, we briefly touched on the life cycle of a butterfly,

painted abstractly about the beautiful colors in Heaven,

and discussed how important is to glorify God no matter your occupation.
And now, I have a first grader. Let me go grab those tissues again....

*sniff*

We'll be starting our new year on September 4th.  Stay tuned!
