I have often listened to Beth Moore on the radio, but have never actually picked up one of her books to read (I know, I know) until now. I was very pleased. A Heart Like His is a comprehensive study of the life of the "man after God's own heart," David.
Beginning with his anointment by Samuel and delving into his "back story" by examining the events in people that were integral parts of David's rise to royalty like Jonathan, Saul, and Samuel, we learn more about how God in His perfect way, aligned so many events to bring his chosen king to reign. Then we journey all the way through David's victory over a giant to the sins he committed that grieved the Lord. Finally, we look into David's faith and devotion to God even amidst his trials and tribulations whether he was in the field attending sheep or on the throne attending to his people. Sometimes we think of David as being incredibly righteous and forget about how often even he stumbled. Even so, God knew that David wanted to please God and it is a wonderful reminder to us that we can still experience God's grace and blessing even when we fall if we only look to Him.
The book is broken up into nine sections, each including short but meaty chapters which examine a portion of David's life in detail. It could easily be used as a daily devotional pairing the suggested Scriptural readings with the lessons taken from this book or as an in depth Bible study using the review questions in the back of the book as a tool to help retain the wealth of information. Beth takes a deep and honest look at David leaving barely a stone unturned and shows how we can strive for and apply the strong, unyielding faith of this shepherd boy turned king to our own lives.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Shelton Interactive in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not required to give a positive review.*
