O is for Octopus

We just wrapped up our letter "O" week and this was one of the crafts that we did while learning about several animals whose names begin with it.  Every week we make an alphabet animal pal and this week we made our friend, Odd the Octopus.  The idea came from a book we use along with our regular preschool curriculum called Alphabet Art.  In the book, the name of the octopus is Octavio, but Aron said he wanted to name his pal Odd.  :)  Hey, it starts with O!

To make your own little octopus amigo, gather up a paper lunch bag, some newspaper, a rubber band, a marker, and some paper hole reinforcers.

Open up the paper bag and stuff it about halfway full with crumpled newspaper.

Once you get the newspaper bunched up into the paper bag, use the rubber band to seal it up at the midway point of the bag.

Cut slits into the bottom half of the bag for "tentacles" and use the paper hole reinforcers make the tentacles to appear to have suction cups like the real thing.

Then draw on a face and you have a new saltwater friend!

So fun and simple!
