Homemade Playdough (No Cream of Tartar Needed!)

Yes, I know that there are about a gazillion recipes floating around the internet for homemade playdough, ranging in variety from edible to almost store bought, but I still thought that I would like to share the one of the recipes that I use on a regular basis.

It is completely non toxic, so it's especially great for toddlers or children who still might be inclined to put their creations in their mouths. :)  It also is super easy and takes hardly any time at all.  I mixed up five colors in less than thirty minutes.

All you need are a few simple ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry:

1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 teaspoons white vinegar
food coloring
(I also added some glitter to the dough)

Mix all the ingredients together in a saucepan and stir constantly over medium heat until...

it all clumps together like so:

Remove from heat and knead for just a few minutes to incorporate it all together nicely.

Rinse and repeat as many times as you want with different colors!

Let the kids dig in!

This is fun!

Store in an airtight container and it will last for months! :)

There you have it.  Easy, cheap, and loads of fun!

  2. This is a great recipe and it cuts down on cost- the cream of tartar can be expensive. I do have a question on your instructions- What do you mean by the phrase"rinse..." Do you mean we have to rinse the dough? Or do you mean to rinse the pan before making new colors? That makes sense but I thought maybe you had a new twist to making the dough!!

  3. Hmm, tried this tonight. First attempt at making playdough at all, but it didn't clump so nicely? It was becoming hard in parts while still being really soft in others and the hard parts were getting pretty firm so I took it out. Did I chicken out too fast? Should I have cooked it longer? Can it be overcooked? It did come together pretty well but did need more flour kneaded in. Thoughts?

Can't wait to let the boy at it tomorrow!

    1. Hmm. I didn't really have a problem with anything getting hard unless I left it in too long(as in I stopped stirring it to go help a child and left it in the pot for several minutes without stirring). I think you need to aim for it to mostly not have any liquid parts still, but not necessarily hard. I found that even when the center was still slightly moist, once I removed it from the heat and kneaded it, the problem was solved. Maybe lower the heat you cooked it over as well and cook it more slowly? Let me know how it turns out and I can try to give more suggestions!

  5. This was so easy and my son loved it. My husband and I even had fun playing with it. My first batch didnt come out either but I read some of the other comments and quickly realized the heat was too high. All the batches after i turned the heat down a little came out perfect.

  6. My first batch had white clumps in it and didnt turn out well. After reading other replies i quickly realized the heat was too high so I turned it down and started a new batch. The next 4 batches I did came out perfectly. We all had a great time playing with it. Thanks for sharing!

  7. I'm so glad that I found your recipe! I was hoping to find a recipe that didn't use cream of tartar. This was so easy and now I have a nice batch of playdough.

  8. Ugh! It turned out great, put it in a plastic container and opened it several days later and it is the consistency of frosting! What the heck? Any suggestions?

    1. Hmmm.. I've not had that problem and we kept ours for weeks after. Did you knead it long enough maybe? Or was the container in a place that was really warm?
